The origins of the xylophone are diverse and date back to ancient times, with roots in both Asia and Africa. The instrument spread to Europe during the Crusades. The French composer Camille Saint-Saëns was one of the first to incorporate the xylophone into orchestral compositions.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the xylophone quickly established itself in the symphonic repertoire, helping to secure a prominent place for the percussion section in orchestras.
The xylophone is a percussion instrument composed of several essential elements:
The Keyboard
The xylophone features a keyboard with bars arranged similarly to those of the marimba. These bars are made from various types of wood, such as African padauk, light rosewood, Honduran rosewood, or composite materials. Each type of wood offers unique characteristics in terms of hardness and sound quality, influencing the choice of instrument depending on its intended use (entry-level, study, or concert).
The length of the bars decreases as the pitch rises: the higher the note, the shorter the bar. The xylophones range generally extends from 3 to 4 octaves.
The Resonators
Located beneath the bars, the resonators are vertically arranged metal tubes that amplify the sound of the keyboard. Their shape and length vary depending on the brand and model.
The Frame
The frame is the structure that supports the keyboard and resonators. It can be made of wood or metal, with a fixed or adjustable height.
The xylophone is played with two mallets, allowing musicians to explore its full range of crisp and bright tones.
